Once you decide on a solid wooden door, the next question is which wood. The choice affects price, weight, colour and how well the door copes with Karachi's heat and humidity. Our family has worked in timber import for more than twenty years, and these are the points we explain to every customer.
Teak is the premium choice for doors in Pakistan. It contains natural oils that help it resist moisture and insects, it is very stable once seasoned, and it has a warm golden-brown colour that deepens with age.
Oak is a hard, heavy wood with a strong, open grain. It takes polish and stain well and gives a solid, classic feel. In doors, oak is used both as solid timber and as a veneer on engineered doors.
Red meranti is a Southeast Asian hardwood, widely imported from Malaysia and Indonesia. It has a reddish-brown colour, a fairly straight grain, and is easy to work. It is a popular middle path between cost and quality.
Yellow pine is a softwood with a light yellow colour and visible grain. It is lighter and more affordable than the hardwoods above.
Two doors made from the same wood can behave very differently. Wood that is not properly dried (seasoned) keeps losing moisture after the door is made, which can cause warping, cracks and doors that stick. Kiln-dried or well air-dried timber is far more stable. Always ask how the wood was dried.
Many families choose teak or oak for the main door and meranti or engineered doors for the rest of the house. Teak is usually considered the best for its durability and natural resistance to moisture and termites. Oak and good-grade meranti are also used for main doors.
Yes. Red meranti is a widely used hardwood that offers good value. Choose a dense grade and make sure it is well sealed.
Usually because the wood was not properly seasoned or the edges were left unsealed, so it gains and loses moisture unevenly.
