The first decision most customers face is not the design or the colour. It is whether to buy a ply door or a solid wooden door. Both are good choices in the right place. This guide explains the real differences so you can decide room by room.
A ply door is an engineered door. Its core is made from plywood or board, and the faces are finished with a decorative layer such as a pasted sheet, melamine, Malaysian HDF ply or ash oak ply. Pasting, Malaysian, melamine, flush and veneer doors all belong to this family. We explain each of them in our guide to door types.
A solid wooden door is made from timber such as teak, oak, red meranti or yellow pine. The stiles, rails and panels are real wood throughout, and the surface is usually polished or painted. Some wooden doors are carved or have a design on one or both sides.
The main door faces sun, dust and sometimes rain, and it needs to be secure. A solid wooden door is the usual choice. If your entrance is sheltered and the budget is tight, a good quality engineered door with sealed edges can also work.
Both work well. Ply doors give a clean modern look at a lower cost. Choose solid wood if you want carving, a classic polished finish or a heavier, quieter door.
Moisture is the main enemy here. Whatever door you choose, make sure all edges, especially the bottom edge, are sealed, and choose a finish that tolerates water splashes. Ask us which of our doors suit wet areas before you order.
An economical ply door is usually enough.
Many people choose solid wood everywhere, then run out of budget for the main door, which is the one that matters most. A sensible plan for a typical house is a strong wooden main door, mid-range doors for the rooms people see, and economical doors for the rest.

For an exposed main entrance, solid wood is usually the better choice for strength and weather. A good engineered door with sealed edges can work for a sheltered entrance.
Ply doors usually cost less per square foot. The price of a wooden door depends mainly on the type of wood.
Unsealed edges can absorb moisture. Keep all edges sealed, especially the bottom edge of bathroom doors.
